What’s Actually Inside Your SkinCandy Balm? A Deep Dive Into Every Ingredient
Published by SkinCandy Balms · Natural Skincare · Australian Made
When you pick up a SkinCandy balm, you’ll notice something unusual: you can actually read the ingredients list. No long chemical names you need a chemistry degree to understand. No synthetic fillers, no preservatives, no nasties hiding behind clever labelling.
Just real ingredients. Ones that have been used on skin for centuries — because they genuinely work.
Here’s a close look at exactly what goes into every tin, and why each ingredient earns its place.
Manuka Honey — Nature’s Healer
Manuka honey is not your average honey. Sourced from bees that pollinate the native Leptospermum (tea tree) plant in New Zealand and parts of Australia, it contains a naturally occurring compound called methylglyoxal (MGO) that gives it remarkable antibacterial and healing properties far beyond those of regular honey.
For skin, this means Manuka honey actively helps fight bacteria that cause inflammation, breakouts, and infections — while simultaneously drawing moisture into the skin and supporting the skin’s natural repair process. It’s particularly effective for dry, cracked, or irritated skin, and has long been used in wound care for this reason.
In our balms, it acts as both a treatment and a humectant, meaning it helps your skin hold onto moisture throughout the day.
Best for: cracked heels, dry lips, irritated or inflamed skin, eczema-prone areas.
Beeswax — The Original Protective Barrier
Beeswax has been used in skincare for thousands of years, and for good reason: it creates a breathable, protective barrier on the surface of the skin without clogging pores.
Unlike petroleum-based alternatives (like Vaseline), beeswax doesn’t simply seal the skin — it allows it to breathe while locking in the good stuff underneath. It also contains natural vitamin A, which supports healthy skin cell turnover.
In our balms, beeswax is what gives them their firm, long-lasting consistency and makes them so effective at protecting skin in harsh conditions — sun, wind, cold, and dry air.
Best for: protecting skin against the elements, locking in moisture, chapped lips and hands.
Coconut Oil — Deep Nourishment From a Tropical Fruit
Cold-pressed coconut oil is one of the most studied natural skincare ingredients in the world. It’s rich in medium-chain fatty acids — particularly lauric acid — which have well-documented antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties.
Coconut oil absorbs beautifully into the skin, delivering deep nourishment without leaving a greasy residue. It helps strengthen the skin’s natural barrier, reduces transepidermal water loss (the technical term for your skin losing moisture to the air), and soothes irritation.
It also has a naturally pleasant scent that contributes to the subtle, clean fragrance of our balms.
Best for: dry or sensitive skin, supporting the skin barrier, soothing minor irritation.
Olive Oil — Liquid Gold for Your Skin
Extra virgin olive oil has been used in Mediterranean beauty rituals for millennia — and modern research backs up why. It’s packed with antioxidants including vitamins E and K, as well as squalene, a compound that closely mirrors your skin’s own natural oils.
This makes olive oil exceptionally compatible with human skin. It softens and conditions without disrupting the skin’s natural balance, and its antioxidant content helps neutralise free radicals that cause premature ageing.
In our balms, olive oil contributes to that silky, skin-loving texture that absorbs well and leaves skin genuinely soft — not just coated.
Best for: mature skin, dryness, antioxidant protection, softening rough patches.
Macadamia Nut Oil — Australia’s Own Liquid Luxury
Macadamia nut oil is one of the few plant oils with a high concentration of palmitoleic acid — a fatty acid that naturally occurs in young, healthy skin but decreases as we age. This makes macadamia oil particularly good at restoring a youthful, supple quality to skin.
It’s also light enough to absorb quickly without feeling heavy, making it an ideal base for balms that need to feel comfortable on the face, hands, and lips.
As an Australian-grown ingredient, macadamia oil is close to our hearts — and close to your skin’s natural chemistry.
Best for: ageing or mature skin, facial use, areas needing fast absorption.
Shea Butter — The Moisture Powerhouse
Shea butter, derived from the nuts of the African shea tree, is one of the most intensely moisturising natural ingredients available. It’s rich in vitamins A, E, and F, as well as essential fatty acids that nourish and condition deeply.
What makes shea butter special is its high concentration of non-saponifiable fats — components that are not converted to soap when combined with other ingredients. This is what gives shea its potent healing and regenerative properties, making it particularly valuable for very dry, rough, or damaged skin.
It also has mild natural SPF properties and is renowned for reducing the appearance of stretch marks, scars, and skin roughness over time.
Best for: very dry skin, cracked skin, improving skin texture, deep overnight treatment.
Hemp Seed Oil — The Skin Balancer
Hemp seed oil is one of the most nutritionally complete plant oils you can put on your skin — and one of the most misunderstood. To be clear: it contains no THC, has no psychoactive properties, and is completely legal. What it does contain is an extraordinary profile of essential fatty acids.
Hemp seed oil has a near-perfect ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids (around 3:1), which closely mirrors the lipid profile of healthy human skin. This makes it exceptionally compatible with your skin’s natural barrier, helping to restore balance rather than disrupt it. It’s also rich in gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), a fatty acid known for its powerful anti-inflammatory properties.
This combination makes hemp seed oil particularly effective for skin conditions driven by inflammation and barrier dysfunction — including eczema, psoriasis, redness, and sensitivity. Unlike heavier oils, it absorbs quickly and is non-comedogenic, meaning it won’t block pores.
In our Hemp Balm, hemp seed oil takes centre stage — working alongside beeswax and Manuka honey to deeply soothe and rebalance even the most reactive skin.
Best for: sensitive or reactive skin, eczema and psoriasis-prone skin, redness, inflammation, oily or acne-prone skin that still needs moisture.
Australian Essential Oils — Scent With a Purpose
Unlike synthetic fragrances, the essential oils in SkinCandy balms are 100% pure and serve a therapeutic function beyond just smelling good.
Australian botanical oils carry the unique properties of our native landscape — antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and skin-balancing compounds that have evolved over millennia. Depending on the balm variety, you may find notes of native botanicals that complement and enhance the other ingredients rather than simply masking them.
We never use synthetic fragrance, which can be a hidden source of skin irritants and allergic reactions. If it’s in a SkinCandy balm, it’s there because it belongs.
What You Will Never Find in a SkinCandy Balm
Just as important as what we put in is what we leave out:
- No parabens — synthetic preservatives linked to hormone disruption
- No mineral oil or petrolatum — petroleum by-products that coat rather than nourish
- No synthetic fragrance — a catch-all term that can hide hundreds of undisclosed chemicals
- No artificial colours — your skin doesn’t need dye
- No sulphates or silicones — common in mainstream products but unnecessary in a balm
- No animal testing — ever
Why Natural Ingredients Matter
There’s a growing body of research suggesting that what we put on our skin matters more than we’ve historically been told. Your skin is your largest organ, and it absorbs a percentage of everything applied to it.
Choosing products with clean, recognisable ingredients isn’t just about avoiding the bad stuff — it’s about actively feeding your skin the nutrients it needs to stay healthy, resilient, and radiant.
At SkinCandy, we believe that if you wouldn’t eat it, you shouldn’t slather it on your skin. Every ingredient in our balms passes that test.
